The East coast of Elba is rich in minerals (hematite, pyrite and iron) which give the sand its golden, reddish or black sparkle! You can find white, red or black sand beaches following the road towards Rio Marina (leaving the campsite turn right at the intersection with the main road).
FORNACELLE (2km). A small cove with sand and white stones. It can be reached from the road to Rio Marina by taking a sign-posted, very steep but short down hill road.
Further on you can find one of our best beaches CALA SEREGOLA (4km), a beautiful, long sandy beach with a kiosk/bar. By the side of the beach you will see the remains of the old mining warehouses and the loading dock. You can drive all the way down to the beach. Free parking.
Alternatively you can leave the car at the start of the Cala Seregola road and with a short 7/8 minute walk reach the enchanting DIRETTORE beach, so called because the Mines Director had his villa there. This is a sparkling black sand beach. Note that the beach is NOT sign-post ed and at times the access may be closed, even if it is a free beach.
Travelling on towards Rio Marina you will find TOPINETTI beach (6km). It is a long beach where the hematite and pyrite black sand contrasts pleasantly with white stones. Big free parking area and kiosk.
There are many more beautiful coves well worth exploring following the so called Sentiero dell’amore, which starts by the APPIANI TOWER (TORRE DEGLI APPIANI) dominating the harbour in Rio Marina. The road is initially sealed and then becomes a dirt track.
MARINA DI GENNARO and LUISI D’ANGELO These pebbly and rocky coves are reached by stairways and short paths, which are not for everyone! Very quiet!
ORTANO A serviced, white sandy beach flanked by rocks and a small isle. Ideal for snorkeling. Take the sing-posted road on the left past the centre of Rio Marina. Leave the car in the free parking before the entrance to the Tourist Village and walk for 200 metres.
