Saint Catherine’s Hermitage and the Orto dei Semplici botanical garden

Follow the road from CAVO to RIO ELBA (11 km) then take the road towards Nisporto until you find the Hermitage.
Leave the car in the small parking area near the National Park information board, then walk along a short and cypress shaded dirt track until you reach Saint Catherine’s hermitage with a fantastic view.
The small church dates from the 1500. The legend says that Saint Catherine, beautiful and dressed in white, appeared to a young shepherd on a spring afternoon and he was asked to celebrate this vision each Easter Monday.
Today the hermitage is a venue for art and photography exhibitions as well as for evocative concerts.
Nearby is the Orto dei Semplici botanic garden, where you can discover the wealth of wild, native, or rare plants and fruit trees of Elba (all catalogued). The garden is divided in 10 areas, and includes the plants of the Mediterranean maquis, such as myrtle and lentisk, grapes such as Aleatico and a rich variety of fruit trees.

Roberto Ballini, the caretaker, is also a bee keeper and he can show you his bees and share with you the secret of how he can go so close to them without protection! And when you meet him, you can also ask him about the Giro d’Italia stage he won!
